Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office Extends Student Voter Registration Drive Prior to Nation’s General Election

West Palm Beach, Fla. - August 21, 2008 - The Supervisor of Elections Office (SOE) is pleased to announce its 8th iVote Project, High School Voter Registration Drive. The project, usually held for two weeks in the spring and fall, has registered more than 13,000 voters since May 2005. This year, the project will be expanded from two weeks to four weeks beginning Monday, September 2 and concluding October 2, 2008.

This year’s extended timeline will allow students to become first-time voters and participate in this year’s Presidential Election. “It has always been a primary goal of my office to create awareness in our County’s youth about the importance of the electoral process,” said Dr. Arthur Anderson, Palm Beach Supervisor or Elections. “This year is particularly exciting for students as they see the media coverage of the upcoming Presidential Election. We want them to understand how important each and every one of their votes actually is,” Anderson added.

The bi-annual iVote Project was brought to the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office through Adina Serell [Special Projects Coordinator] in partnership with the League of Women Voters and in addition to other local organizations. The program, which is presented in high school classrooms throughout Palm Beach County, includes a brief civics lesson, voter registration and a demonstration of the current voting system.

In addition to the expanded high school voter registration program, Palm Beach County’s College Week will also be extended with voter registration drives being held on campuses from September 2nd through October 2nd. The College Week voter registration drive is a newer addition to the iVote program, but will play a larger role in this election year.
